Call of Duty 6 confirmed

Shacknews reports that a sixth entry into the Call of Duty franchise is currently in development for a 2009 release, as confirmed by Bobby Kotick, CEO of Activision Publishing.

Shortly after this announcement however, Mike Griffith, Activision Publishing CEO, stated that the title is in development for the 2010 calendar year, and that it would be monetised along with Call of Duty World at War.

“The average Call of Duty player has spent five full 24-hour days playing online,” Griffith said, “and over time, we’ll find ways to increase the monetization of this opportunity.” This looks to be in the form of premium DLC content, as reported by GameCyte.

The series' original creator, Infinity Ward, has returned to develop the sixth instalment.

The 5th game in the series, Call of Duty: World at War, is due for release November 14th 2008, for PC, Xbox 360, PS3 and Wii.

Developed by Treyarch, the title looks to be a improvement over their last stab at the franchise, the reportedly disappointing Call of Duty 3.

Having seen a two-year development period (vs. CoD3, which was only in development for about a year.), Call of Duty: World at War sports a four-player co-op mode (online or splitscreen) and an expansion of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare's refreshing multiplayer component.

Returning to the World War II setting, the CoD franchise makes its first trek to the Pacific theatre and later returns to Europe for the latter period of the War on the Eastern front, as a Russian soldier. If you haven't already, check out Gameplanet's hands-on preview.
