Default Inside a 60 gb XBOX360

the new Xbox 360 has a 60GB HDD, which is new, but what about the rest of the console? Anything new inside the unit? Hacker extraordinaire Ben Heck got hold of one and busted it open like a naughty coconut to find out. What he found was that the new console has the same GPU, same 65nm CPU and same heatsink as we've been seeing for a while now, so don't expect any heat/noise improvements on that front (at least for the next few months), though he did notice that some of the console's memory chips have been moved from the bottom of the board, which should ease up on heating in that part of the 360. Other than that...yeah, it's a 360, with 40 extra GB.

There it is. Now your Xbox can have the same size hard drive as a 4 year old laptop. Personally I don’t see why the Xbox & Ps3 are so hung up on hard drive space, you either have one, or you don’t (ahem Wii)

Looks normals so far. Current 65nm CPU & heatsink… same old “super” GPU heatsink. I bet a lot of the cost reduction on the 360 was getting rid of the old heatpipe/copper CPU… copper is pretty costly these days!

A close-up of the DVD drive specs, for those who care.

Ah, I have found a difference! This is the first Xbox 360 I have seen that does not have the bottom-mounted memory chips. I had heard on the interwebs these have been a heat problem in the past (or moreso that people fixed problems by improving their heat sink to the case) so I’m sure this will help performance as well as aid cost reduction.

And here’s the GPU… and it’s the same. Can’t say I’m surprized… the first Elites didn’t even have the improved GPU heatsink, and the 65nm CPU’s didn’t roll out (or rather because easily obtainable) until about 4 months after they were of supposed to have appeared.

The power supply is the real kicker for new Xbox 360 owners to check. The old model was 206 watt… the new ones with a 65nm CPU are 175 watt (as shown)… and likely any model with a 65nm GPU will be around 140-150 watts.

Keep an eye out, and spread the word as the Xbox 360 gets better and better!

Nice, thanks for the information... Why have they not rolled out the new hardware yet? I thought it was being put into Elites from launch.. Seems like they want more RRoD's! :|

That's the same for me mate, I still have a launch PS2... still works now.

That's the problem these days, with the demand and the cost cutting schemes companies have these days, they will risk break downs. But it looks like m$ has learnt its lesson this time around with the 1billion lost through repairs.. Why did they change from how they made the first xbox? i've had that since launch and it still works perfectly!!! and that has been kicked, punched, dropped and thrown.

I guess it's all about the technology they're using.

the ps2 was badly built console, had lots of problems, im the only person i know who has their original console, and even in that the dvd player no longer works. I just hope next gen they sort it out so that there are no problems with any of the consoles.

Yeah some good info here. I have to say my 360 was replaced a couple of years ago and its still going strong. I had an rrod once so turned it off and on and pretended it didn't happen and it hasn't for the last 5 months or so. Oh and just for anyone who's interested, the first 360 didn't rrod, something else failed inside it. That's the trouble with cost cutting. People want things cheaper and are still surprised when the cheap things break, strange to think that my orginal xbox which i paid full launch price for is still going strong.
